Why on earth would we say that? Neither of us wants to live without physical exercise now, but we sure didn’t start out that way. In fact, Jay didn't even start regularly exercising until she had already lost 80 pounds! Now, she fits in at least an hour before she goes to work in the morning. Janice, more of a sluggard, does just a half hour. But for both of us, incorporating exercise into our lives was a process, not an event.
Exercise is a truly important element of both physical and mental health. It’s also vital in helping to prevent weight from creeping back on once you’ve lost it. We’re not saying that exercise doesn’t matter — we’re saying that you don’t need to worry about it. Especially if you're just starting out.
Don’t let the thought of “having to” be physically active deter you from moving ahead on a new path of eating differently. You may be at a time in your life when you’re not comfortable exercising in public. You may not have the stamina to work out at home. We get that. Don’t worry about it. We promise you that there will come a time in this process where you will want to be more physically active.
In future posts in this category, we’ll tell you more about our own journeys from being sedentary to active. We hope to inspire you — and we’d love to learn from you as well. Please let us know if you have any questions about getting started, or if there were any strategies that already work for you. In the meantime, when you do anything physical at all, even if it's just trudging up a flight of stairs, give yourself some credit!
